Umzinto’s Prospect Road Officially Becomes Rising Sun Road

Umdoni Municipality took part in the formal ceremony marking the renaming of Prospect Road in Umzinto to Rising Sun Road, honoring the Mid-South Coast Rising Sun’s 125 years of service to the local community.

Addressing attendees, Mayor Cllr MJ Cele-Luthuli emphasized that the change goes beyond updating signage. “This is about acknowledging identity, heritage, and gratitude,” she said. “Our street names should reflect our stories and recognize those who have shaped our shared journey.”

For more than a century, the Rising Sun has anchored community journalism amplifying residents’ voices, documenting local history, and capturing daily life in the region. The publication’s impact extends past news coverage, with feeding schemes, student sponsorships, and other community initiatives that directly support Umdoni’s development goals.

“The new name stands as a permanent tribute to an institution that has stood with this community for 125 years,” the Mayor added.

She noted that Rising Sun Road will remain a lasting symbol of local pride and the values the community holds together.
